The book is an autobiography of a Glaswegian called Robert Douglas and it concentrates mainly on his journey through childhood in 1940’s/50’s Maryhill, Glasgow.
This is the Glasgow of World War Two and the immediate aftermath, the single end (one room flat), the coal fire, the close and the toilet on the landing, the pictures (cinema), Italian cafes, drinking, smoking, wife beating and poverty.
He conjures up a world of National buses with bluebirds on the side, tramcars, lamplighters, pawnbrokers and the joy of simple pleasure as well as a pragmatic acceptance of disappointment, pain and tragedy.
Douglas touchingly describes his love and solidarity for and sympathy with his mother who is in effect a single parent despite her attached marital status. She goes to clean house for ‘toffs’ in Hillhead a few miles away but a million miles away on the social scale. The father’s main contribution to family life is to appear occasionally to bully his wife and son and abuse them.
This is a highly honest and unpretentious book.
