Synopsis

Subtitled : A Savannah Story.

Part True-Crime thriller, part travelogue, part quirky character study and part eulogy on man's love of a city.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a non-fiction novel by John Berendt. The book, Berendt's first, was published on January 10, 1994, and follows the story of Jim Williams, an antiques dealer on trial for the killing of Danny Hansford.

Subtitled A Savannah Story, with an initial printing of 25,000 copies, the book became a New York Times Best-Seller for 216 weeks following its debut and remains one of the longest-standing New York Times Best-Sellers.

Berendt combined self-witnessed experiences during his time living in Savannah (roughly four years after the shooting) with stories from the preceding years recounted to him by locals; he catches up with proceedings around the book's mid-point. Williams was a free man during Berendt's five years in Savannah.

External Reviews

"This story is timeless, the characters are so well developed. It transports you to the old south, full of charm and intrigue."

"No matter the rating - it’s worth the read. If you remind yourself this is nonfiction, you’ll enjoy the telling of the events. People who forget it’s NOT fiction will likely rate it lower for not being more like other works of fiction. I fully became engulfed in this story and the author did a great job in detailing the events. This was an effortless read and was easily transported via the rich descriptors. If you love true crime and based on true events, you’ll like this." - Goodreads Reviews.
