Andy Wightman - The Poor Had No Lawyers (Who Owns Scotland) (2nd Hand Paperback)
Synopsis
Updated Edition.
Who owns Scotland? How did they get it?
What happened to all the common land in Scotland?
Has the Scottish Parliament made any difference?
Can we get our common good land back?
In this book, Andy Wightman updates the statistics of landownership in Scotland and explores how and why landowners got their hands on the millions of acres of land that were once held in common.
He tells the untold story of how Scotland's legal establishment and politicians managed to appropriate land through legal fixes.
Have attempts to redistribute this power more equitably made any difference, and what are the full implications of the recent debt-fuelled housing bubble, the Smith Commission and the new Scottish Government's proposals on land reform?
For all those with an interest in urban and rural land in Scotland, this updated edition of The Poor Had No Lawyers provides a fascinating analysis of one the most important political questions in Scotland.

External Reviews
"A compulsively readable account of how Scotland has come to have a more concentrated pattern of private landownership than almost any other country in the world, how the landed elite has managed to survive for centuries up to the present day, and the reforms that are needed to address inequalities in land tenure."
"This is a masterful, scholarly, meticulously researched book which should sit on every bookshelf in Scotland." - Goodreads Reviews.
"Andy Wightman deserves great praise for this. A lifetime of research has gone into it, and he has a wonderful grasp of one of the great injustices of our times - how the very rich stay very rich through umpteen generations. I'm English, not Scottish, so much of the finer points of Scottish law were obscure for me, but the gist of his exposure of the unfairness of it all, and the sheer decency of the writer, shine through. A book that just might inspire a revolution. Good luck, Andy Wightman. Well done." - Amazon Review.
