Synopsis

Subtitled : Building Modern Britain.

The story of Britain's road development - graphically and beautifully illustrated on our maps - is also the story of its political, economic and social history. And the car, more than any other single factor, has shaped our landscape and changed our maps. Busy, bustling, often creaking at the seams, most of us have a love-hate relationship with our roads.

Like it or not, our modern lifestyles depend on them - not only for getting there from A to B, but for the distribution of almost everything we buy. Yet once upon a time, the building of roads was seen as a glorious and heroic enterprise. Britain's motorways - 'the cathedrals of the modern world' - are the ultimate expression of our modern age. From the old ways to the motorways, Mapping the Roads, charts the ambitions and hopes of the nation through our maps.

External Reviews

"A really interesting book charting the history of road creation and numbering. Lots of information about the early days of motor cars and the hazards they encountered/created. I laughed out loud when I read that people ask for Ben Nevis' summit postcode because they intend to climb it using a Satnav! Thoroughly reinforces my innate dislike of these things! If you like maps and driving, this is for you." - Helen Piper.

"Mike Parker is your man when it comes to maps. This is a very nice sample of road mapping, spun round an account of the development of the road system in this country. The samples of published maps from all eras are excellently reproduced and his comments are pithy and well-considered. I enjoyed this and recommend it." - Amazon Review.
