Synopsis

A post-apocalyptic debut novel in a tradition that includes The Hunger Games and Station Eleven, this vision of a possible future shows humanity pushed beyond its breaking point, the forging of vital bonds when everything is lost, and, most centrally, a heroic young woman who crosses a frozen landscape to find her destiny.

Lynn McBride has learned much since society collapsed in the face of nuclear war and the relentless spread of disease. As the memories of her old life continue to surface, she’s forced to forge ahead in the snow-drifted Canadian Yukon, learning how to hunt and trap and slaughter.

Forget the old days. Forget summer. Forget warmth. Forget anything that doesn’t help you survive in the endless white wilderness beyond the edges of a fallen world.

External Reviews

". . . the setting was very atmospheric. The author infused the book with a strong sense of family holding together against disaster and overall, this was a fresh and interesting look at an apocalyptic future."

"I found this book very similar to an old Jack London novel. Very slow-paced for the first half, gorgeous descriptions of the cold and survival in an unforgiving land. There is very little action in the first part of the book. However, about halfway through, things begin to pick up and the writing takes a very cool, dystopian/sci-fi turn that had me on the edge of my seat. Johnson’s prose is so, SO strong. Every word choice is absolutely gorgeous. You can see every sunset and taste the snow. He absolutely transports you to the Yukon and keeps you there right on the page. I connected with the loneliness of Lynn and wanted to stay with her story. Very much enjoyed this and look forward to more of the author’s work." - The Library Thing.

‘A cracking futuristic adventure, told with pace and panache and packed with vivid, shiver-inducing description’ - Daily Mail.

‘Read this in one sitting. deeply satisfying.’ - Lucy Mangan.
