Paul H. Scott - Andrew Fletcher & The Treaty of Union (2nd Hand Hardback)
Synopsis
By two Acts of Union, the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland - which at the time were separate states with separate legislatures, but with the same monarch - were, in the words of the Treaty, "United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain".
Andrew Fletcher has been known since his own lifetime as The Patriot because of his determined resistance to this parliamentary Union of Scotland and England in 1707.
More recently he has won a new reputation for the boldness, lucidity and originality of his political thought, in which he advocated parliamentary democracy, Scottish independence and European co-operation.

External Reviews
"This is Paul Scott at his most scholarly. It is a thoroughly researched biography of the famous Scottish republican author and opponent of the 1707 Union of the Scottish and English Parliaments . . . His historical writings though, particularly this work on Fletcher, will give his ideas on Scottish political life and on the public significance of literature the longevity they deserve. In those respects, he is himself a successor of Fletcher. Highly recommended." - Amazon Review
