Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon.

Orphaned by their mother's death and their father's disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution.

Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles - and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined.

External Reviews

"The novel was very well written. It gives a good insight into Ethiopian and some Indian lifestyles. The plot is well defined with a range of intriguing characters and keeps the reader interested right to the last page. The author's medical profession is very evident." - Google Review.

"Narrated by Marion the first born twin we are told of every influence on his and his brother’s existence. More than the story being told however, the novel is an accurate portrayal of life in all it’s cruelty and wonder."

"This book is both brilliant and breath-taking. I absolutely loved it. Abraham Verghese is not only a distinguished physician, but an extremely talented writer. The prose is some of the very best I have encountered in a novel, and the story itself is hugely compelling. Verghese takes his time setting up the story and introducing the cast of characters that will be thoroughly developed throughout the course of the novel. I gobbled this stuff right up! It’s a book about home and belonging – both to your country and to your loved ones. Family is defined by those people to whom we feel the greatest connection, whether through blood or through the fulfilment of our greatest needs in life, including love, loyalty and dependability."
