John McGahern - That They May Face The Rising Sun (2nd Hand Paperback)
Synopsis
That They May Face the Rising Sun (published in the UK as By the Lake in some editions) is John McGahern's final novel, published in 2002.
Set on the shores of a lake in rural County Roscommon, it follows Joe and Kate Ruttledge, a couple who have returned from London to live quietly among a small, tightly-knit farming community.
The novel has almost no conventional plot - it's structured around the passing of a year, with the lake and its surroundings acting as a kind of anchor for everything that happens.

External Reviews
"A masterpiece . . . McGahern has written a novel of extraordinary beauty." - The Guardian.
"Luminous . . . a novel of profound stillness and grace." - The Irish Times.
"One of the great novels of rural life in any language." - The Sunday Times.
"If you like a beautifully written book that is not a racy thriller and doesn't have a fast-moving plot, but is atmospheric and lyrically descriptive. then you will enjoy this. I had never heard of the author before but quite understand that he is very well regarded - his writing captures an image to perfection and describes a character so well that you almost feel they are in the room with you. The "action" takes place around a lake in Ireland and describes the life of the people living in the area across the span of a year, with its daily conversations, its little scandals, family stories, rivalries and so forth. Not a lot happens overall, and it is very Irish! But there is no doubt that it is exquisitely written. A gentle read for when you are not rushing around." - Book Fiend.
'McGahern brings us that tonic gift of the best fiction, the sense of truth - the sense of transparency that permits us to see imaginary lives more clearly than we see our own.' - John Updike.
'I have admired, even loved, John McGahern's work since his first novel.' - Melvyn Bragg.
