Synopsis

This unusual book contains photographs of the earth's surface transmitted from the orbiting Landsat satellite (pre-1986).

Published in 1986, Earthwatch : A Survey of the World from Space is a visual showcase of early satellite imagery curated by Charles Sheffield, then chief scientist of the Earth Satellite Corporation.

The book features over 70 high-resolution, false-colour images captured by Landsat satellites, revealing the Earth's surface in startling detail - from shifting desert dunes and intricate river deltas to sprawling urban grids. Sheffield’s accompanying text provides expert geographical and geological context, explaining how these "eyes in the sky" revolutionized our understanding of natural resources, environmental changes, and human impact on the planet.

External Reviews

"I grew up with this book. It sparked an obsession with world geography in my teens which led to a fascination for travel. It's a really wonderful piece of work.

The format is thus: open the book up on most pages, and on the righthand page you have a gorgeous Landsat image of somewhere spectacular from around the world. On the left is a map explaining what you're looking at, and a couple-of-hundred-word essay explaining about whatever is most fascinating about the picture.

It's not exhaustive - 160 pages cherry-picking from the most stunning LandSat images available in 1981 - but what's there is bewitching. I remember fanning the book out on the floor, poring over each picture, absolutely lost in it, and in hunting for all the details I was being told about." - M. Sowden.
