Synopsis

Intrepid travellers Chris and Carolyn Caldicott own and run the World Food Café in London's Covent Garden.

In this cookbook they bring together vegetarian recipes from around the world, travellers' tales that describe how the recipes were discovered, and Chris's travel photographs.

The book features dishes adapted from recipes gathered in the Middle East and Africa; India, Nepal and Sri Lanka; Southeast Asia and China; and Latin America.

Each section begins with an introduction to the food of the region - the ingredients, the customs, and the ways in which they are cooked. A selection of recipes follows, with suggestions for variations, advice on how to combine dishes in menus and, often, the story behind the recipe.

Food photographer James Merrell contributes photographs of the recipes.

    External Reviews

"This is an aesthetically beautiful half travelogue, half recipe book. The photos are impressive, the anecdotes entertaining, and the recipes ethnic. They are all vegetarian, and most of them are also suitable for vegans. They are straightforward to prepare, but often time-consuming; you often have to do lots of peeling, slicing, chopping and grinding before you can get started with the cooking. About half of the recipes are Asian, so you also need a fairly comprehensive stock of herbs and spices."

"There is lots of variety and plenty of recipes bursting with exciting and fresh flavours, and unexpected combinations. I particularly recommend the African Sweet Potatoes - A sauce based on tomatoes, peanuts and pineapple juice which makes the taste buds dance with joy! A real breath of fresh air, and a recommended purchase for the vegetarian who wants to move on from nut roast, bean stews etc." - Google Reviews.

"More than a run of the mill recipe book. This collection of ethnic vegetarian dishes, combined with stunning travel and food photography is also a guide to the history of food in some of the world's most colourful regions." - Geographical Magazine.
