Synopsis

The Buddha of Suburbia is a novel by British Pakistani author Hanif Kureishi, which won the Whitbread Award for the best first novel. The Buddha of Suburbia is the bizarre, often hilarious, and totally original picture of the life of a young Pakistani man growing up in 1970's Britain.

The novel has been translated into 20 languages and was also made into a four-part drama series by the BBC in 1993.

The hero of Hanif Kureishi's debut novel is dreamy teenager Karim, desperate to escape suburban South London and experience the forbidden fruits which the 1970's seem to offer.

When the unlikely opportunity of a life in the theatre announces itself, Karim starts to win the sort of attention he has been craving - albeit with some rude and raucous results.

With the publication of Buddha of Suburbia, Hanif Kureishi landed into the literary landscape as a distinct new voice and a fearless taboo-breaking writer.

External Reviews

'A naughty, bubbly book.' - Zadie Smith.

'Wickedly funny.' - New York Times.

'Utterly irreverent and wildly improper, but also genuinely touching and truthful.' - Salman Rushdie.

"A wonderful novel, I doubt I will read a funnier one, or one with more heart, this year, possibly this decade." - Angela Carter.

"With its quintessential 70s setting in cultural and political terms, the novel ends with the watershed election of Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government in 1979. A very good read and a superb recreation of a time and place."

"It surpassed my expectations. The mix of humour with trauma and truth with irony and the exploration of different cultures is brilliant!" - Goodreads Reviews.

"Skewering bedsit political agitators, pretentious theatre impressarios and just about anybody else it sets its sharply satirical eye on, Kureishi’s semi-autobiographical debut is a bawdy, brilliant piece of work." - Waterstones.
